Red Pyramid
A northern pyramid on Dahshur's desert edge
Dahshur occupies the southern part of the ancient Memphite necropolis, where the cultivated Nile valley gives way to a rocky desert plateau. The Red Pyramid stands on the northern part of that ground, about one kilometre north of Sneferu's Bent Pyramid. The spacing matters. These are not two views of one monument but two enormous building projects whose profiles can be compared across the same landscape.2
Its modern name comes from the reddish local limestone now exposed across the core. The original outer face was different: fine white Tura limestone formed a casing that was later removed for reuse. What visitors see today is therefore both monument and section, the rougher structural body revealed after the finished skin largely disappeared.1
A continuous face after the bend
The Red Pyramid belongs to Sneferu's extraordinary sequence of large pyramids. At Meidum, a stepped core was transformed into a smooth-sided form. At southern Dahshur, the Bent Pyramid begins steeply and then changes to a shallower angle. The northern pyramid holds a shallow inclination from base to summit. The Egyptian Ministry describes it as Egypt's first completed true pyramid, a continuous smooth-sided form that anticipates the larger monuments at Giza.1
That sequence is often told as a simple story of failure followed by success. The architecture is more useful when read with greater care. The Red Pyramid's lower angle reduces the amount of rise gained for each metre of inward run. This creates a lower summit over a very broad base and changes the loads carried through the masonry. The sequence makes an engineering response plausible, but the shape itself cannot tell us every decision that produced it.
The envelope in metres and royal cubits
Richard Jones gives an original height of about 105 metres, a base length of 220 metres and roughly 160 masonry courses. The corresponding square-pyramid geometry produces a face angle of 43.66778 degrees, a sloping edge from base midpoint to summit of about 152.07 metres and an envelope volume near 1.69 million cubic metres. Jones also notes that the course count and average course heights are approximate, drawing the masonry observations from earlier archaeological publications.3

The royal cubit comparison is revealing precisely because it is not perfectly neat. Using the site's representative Giza value of 0.523748 metre, the two dimensions become about 420.1 and 200.5 cubits.4 Rounded archaeological dimensions, an inferred cubit standard and a damaged casing cannot support a claim that the builders specified those modern decimal equivalents exactly. They do show the likely scale: about 420 cubits across and about 200 cubits high.
The shallow face across Dahshur
The seked expresses a slope as horizontal run for one royal cubit of vertical rise. From the 220 by 105 metre envelope, half the base is 110 metres and the seked is about 7.33 palms. A larger seked produces a shallower face. The Red Pyramid therefore sits close to the upper, reduced inclination of the Bent Pyramid rather than its steep lower face.

Three chambers under corbelled roofs
The entrance opens high on the north face and leads down a narrow passage. The official monument description follows the route into a first chamber with a corbelled roof, then a second chamber set beneath the centre of the pyramid, and finally a third chamber to the south that is generally identified as the burial chamber. In a corbelled roof, each successive masonry course projects inward until the gap can be closed. The stepped profile transfers weight away from the open room below.1

What the proportions reveal
The Red Pyramid's most persuasive pattern is visible at the scale of the whole monument. A broad base, a comparatively low rise and a continuous casing surface turn the changed angle seen at the Bent Pyramid into a complete architectural form. The reconstructed slant-to-half-base ratio is about 1.382, roughly 0.032 below the square root of two. That proximity is a mathematical observation, not a building instruction. The seked is the more historically grounded language because it describes the practical relation between rise and run used in Egyptian slope problems.
The interior adds a second pattern: three successive spaces, each protected by corbelling, reached along a controlled north-to-south route. Exterior simplicity and interior sequence work together. The smooth face presents one unbroken royal monument to the landscape; the passages divide movement into descent, transition and an elevated final chamber.
