Pyramid of Menkaure

At the southern edge of the Giza group, Menkaure's pyramid makes uncertainty visible: its published base lengths vary, while its granite casing and unfinished complex preserve the evidence of a different royal project.

01 · ContextMenkaure's smaller pyramid complex at Giza

Menkaure's pyramid stands at Giza as the third and smallest of the three principal royal pyramids. The Egyptian Ministry identifies Menkaure as Khafre's son and Khufu's grandson, and dates his reign to about 2532–2503 BCE. It places the pyramid within a broader complex that includes three smaller pyramids, a mortuary temple, causeway and valley temple.1 The smaller pyramid is therefore not a reduced copy of Khufu's: its materials, completion history and adjacent buildings create a distinct record.

Its profile is only one part of that record. Jones's chapter on the complex begins with the casing and unfinished temples rather than an ideal triangle. He describes granite at the lower casing and limestone above it, and reports that the complex was not completed during Menkaure's lifetime.2 The most useful question is consequently not which famous constant the outline resembles, but what the surviving fabric permits a reader to calculate.

02 · ProfileThe published base range and a 65-metre height

Jones gives the pyramid a height of 65 m and reports base lengths ranging from 102.2 to 104.6 m, citing Mark Lehner's 1997 synthesis. He uses 103.4 m as the average base in a construction-rate calculation and gives a face angle of 51.5 degrees.2 The range matters. It is evidence that the page is working from reported measurements, not a single exact design specification.

For a transparent comparison, the table keeps Jones's 103.4 m average as a labelled input. Halving it gives 51.7 m. With a 65 m rise, an ideal square-pyramid section has a slant height of 83.05 m and an angle of 51.50 degrees. These last two values are derived geometry. They do not claim that an intact ancient edge was measured to the displayed decimals.

03 · SlopeA seked-style reading of the average profile

A seked describes horizontal run for one royal cubit of vertical rise. It is a useful comparative language, but this page does not infer a documented cubit count from the metric profile. Using the 103.4 m average and 65 m height, the run-to-rise relationship is 51.7 ÷ 65 = 0.7954. Expressed only as a modern comparative translation, that equals about 5.57 palms for a seven-palm royal cubit of rise.

The calculation tests the shape without manufacturing an ancient instruction. A different selected base within Jones's reported range changes the result. That sensitivity is precisely why the page presents the range beside the average rather than collapsing both into a neat, supposedly measured ratio.

04 · FabricGranite casing and an unfinished complex

Menkaure's casing gives the monument its particular material character. Jones reports that the first sixteen courses were granite and that the remainder was white limestone, while the Ministry describes granite at the lower part of the casing and limestone above.12 Both accounts place the granite within a broader construction sequence rather than treating it as decorative detail.

The mortuary and valley temples make the interrupted sequence visible. Jones reports Reisner's evidence for an original stone phase, including limestone and granite, followed by completion in mudbrick under Shepseskaf.2 The change in material is part of the historical meaning of the complex: a monument's measurable outline survives alongside a record of choices, interruption and later completion.

05 · MeaningWhat Menkaure's measures reveal about the site

Menkaure's pyramid is smaller than its two Giza neighbours, but its evidence is unusually rich in variation. The base range warns against false precision; the granite and limestone casing show an ambitious material programme; and the temples retain a sequence of stone work, interruption and completion. Together they make the pyramid a better guide to architectural process than a search for a single elegant number.

The profile also has a practical lesson for comparison. The 103.4 m average is useful because it lets the arithmetic be shown, yet it is not licensed to erase the measured range on either side of it. A reader can reproduce the right-triangle calculation, then alter the selected base within the range and see why its angle, slant and seked-style result must be treated as results of a stated model. That is a stronger form of numerical curiosity: it makes each choice visible and keeps the pyramid's material history in view.
