Roman Dodecahedron: Model Versus Object

A perfect solid can sharpen questions about an imperfect, enigmatic artefact without pretending to solve it.

What museums record

Surviving examples are hollow copper-alloy objects with twelve pentagonal faces, apertures of different diameters, and knobs at the vertices. Their sizes vary, and their function remains unknown.

What the calculator does

Given an edge or overall diameter, the tool derives the geometry of a regular dodecahedron. Wall thickness produces an idealised inner solid; aperture diameter produces a transparent ratio. These are comparisons, not claims about manufacture.

What it refuses to do

It does not announce a rangefinder, knitting aid, calendar, or ritual instrument as solved. A use theory must explain context, variation, wear, apertures, bosses, and the absence of a secure textual description.

Practical next stepRun the claim through the converter or geometry tool, record the selected source context, and keep that provenance with the result.
